Pelham Alabama, The Fun Stuff

Well I realize that I said to stay tuned until tomorrow to discover all the fun stuff that Pelham has to offer and it is now a week later…time flies when you are having fun. I know the anticipation is building, so let's get started.

Right now in Pelham we are hosting the Alabama State Fair. The fair is located at the Verizon Wireless Music Center. The dates are August 27 – September 6, 2010. There is a petting zoo for the kids and I understand you can ride an elephant. I also heard something else about monkeys riding dogs. This is a family “must do” event!

While you are visiting the fair, we have several good restaurants along Highway 119 to grab a bite to eat. We have your normal fast food: Chick-fil-A, Krystals, McDonalds, Whatabuger, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken. Then for the nicer restaurants we have: O’Charley’s, Applebees’, Margarita Grill, Ruby Tuesdays & Texas Roadhouse. For veggies along Highway 119 we have Cracker Barrel and Golden Corral.
Speaking of restaurants, we have so many good restaurants in the Pelham area that I am including a link that gives the names and addresses of the eating places here.

Also, in Pelham we have the Pelham Civic Complex which has two ice rinks. The rink complex holds ice skating classes and it is the home of the University of Alabama Hockey team. At the complex you can have birthday parties, wedding receptions and meetings. It is a versatile complex and is located adjacent to the Verizon Wireless Center.

Pelham also has two other  great sports complex: Ballentrae Golf and the Pelham Racquet Club.

Ballantrae Golf Club won the following awards: “The Best New Affordable Public Golf Course” in 2005 from Golf Digest and “Top 50 Courses for Women” from Golf for Women Magazine. At the Ballentrae Golf Club the course is very beautiful and affordable, please check the website for all the up to date specials. They also serve a wonderful breakfast buffet on Saturday mornings!

Pelham Racquet Club was voted USTA Outstanding Facility Awards in 2002. The Racquet Club has 20 clay courts and 5 hard courts. It has stadium seating on one court and it is the home of the Pro Circuit Women’s $25,000 Challenger. (usually held each Spring) They host many USTA tournaments through out the year ranging from Junior tennis all the way to Senior Adult Tennis.

In addition to these great facilities we have the following parks located here in Pelham:

Welcome to Pelham, Alabama

Over the next few days I am going to talk about some of the great communities in Pelham Alabama. But first I would like introduce you to the city, itself. The City of Pelham was incorporated July 10, 1964. It is a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama located in Shelby County - one of the fastest growing counties of Alabama. According to the latest population data Pelham has approximately 21,699 people living in this area.

Location
Pelham is located at 33°18′16″N 86°47′5″W33.30444°N 86.78472°W (33.304581, -86.784620) in the foothills of Oak Mountain State Park. Situated in a valley, you can see Oak Mountain on one side and Pelham Heights, which separates Pelham and Helena, on the other side. US Highway 31 runs through the middle of the valley and provides an ideal location for many businesses. There are 3 industrial parks in Pelham which provide stable employment to some of the people of the city. Because Pelham has 3 exits off I-65 it provides a great stopping place for people who work in Birmingham and Hoover as well as well as those traveling north and south on I-65.

Climate
The temperature is usually mild winters and hot summers!

Schools
We have 5 great schools in our city:
Valley Elementary is located on US 31 has a new addition and teaches students K – 2nd grade,
Valley Intermediate is located on Highway 33 and teaches students 3rd – 5th grade,
Riverchase Middle is just up road toward Riverchase and teaches students 6th – 8th grade
Pelham High is located on the mountain and is a landmark for the city, teaches students 9th – 12th grade.
Linda Nolen Learning Center is located on Highway 35 and serves students with special needs in self-contained classrooms. The students’ ages range from 3 – 21.

Tomorrow I will discuss the restaurants, sports and fun stuff that Pelham has to offer.

Stay tune…until tomorrow.
